Mood disorders are a group of mental health conditions that affect a person’s emotional state or mood.

These conditions can impact a person’s ability to function in daily life and can include a range of symptoms, such as changes in mood, energy, or activity levels.

Types of Mood Disorders and Common Symptoms

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

  • People with MDD experience persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or lack of interest in activities they used to enjoy. Symptoms can include changes in appetite and sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and thoughts of suicide.

Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes of mania or hypomania (elevated or irritable mood) and depression. During a manic episode, a person may have high levels of energy, decreased need for sleep, and engage in risky behaviors. During a depressive episode, they may have feelings of sadness or hopelessness, changes in appetite and sleep patterns, and difficulty concentrating.Binge Eating Disorder

It’s important to note that different types of mood disorders may require different approaches to therapy. WBH admissions and providers can help determine the best approach for an individual’s specific needs.
